I am not an expert on literature for studying Hebrew, but I feel that this is one of best books for "serious beginners", i.e., beginners who intend to learn the language thouroughly. If you only want to learn some Hebrew quickly for your next hollidays in Israel, this book is not the right choice. The presentation includes a lot of grammar and reading practice to lay the foundation for a steep learning curve. However, right in the beginning, although you learn a lot, you will not be able to speak immediately.Hence, be careful, getting familial with the foundations of the language takes quite a while (depending on how much time you invest, I'd say, between a week and a month), but after that, the "practical" learning curve is pretty steep, and you quickly learn how to maintain a simple conversation in Hebrew. I feel that the structure of the book makes sense. The first chapter takes long, but the other chapters are much faster to work with. The book is not very similar to the colored schoolbooks we are used to, but well, colors and pictures are not so important for your understanding. Nice dialogues and good explanations definitely make up for the lack of colors. And, nicely enough, there are pictures from time to time :-)So, yes, I definitely think that the presentation is very accessible and does not require any prerequisites --- unlike "The Routledge Introductory Course in Modern Hebrew", that is praised for its good grammar presentation. The recordings on the CD are very suitable to accompany the course and indispensable, if you are not in Israel while learning Hebrew. So, overall, a great book to start with.Good luck and have fun!
One of the best books in Routledge Colloquial Languages series. Essential starting with script and then gradually and effectevely building on. Highly recommended for beginners as well as more serious students of Hebrew. Also my respect to Amazon Deutschland for extremely fast and quality shipping. Vielen Dank!
Der Aufbau dieses Buches gefällt mir sehr gut und die vielen Übungen sind wirklich hilfreich. Was ich jedoch ärgerlich finde ist das relativ kleine Format. Die hebräischen Buchstaben sind sehr klein, so dass es für mich noch ziemlich anstrengend ist, die Zeichen voneinander zu unterscheiden. Daher nur 4 Sterne, trotzdem sehr empfehlenswert. Vielleicht gibt es ja auch mal eine deutsche Ausgabe?!
THIS REVIEW REFERS TO THE E-BOOK VERSION even if amazon publishes it under the hard cover edition. I have bought both, my criticism does not pertain to the "real" book, only to the kindle edition.I bought this book after I tried "Selbstlernkurs Hebräisch" by Cornelsen which I really found pretty bad.I don't think that an eBook is ideal for language studies unless it's really been transformed with links and multimedia etc. but the printed version is hard to get from Germany. So this book is just a download, nothing fancy, but it is very, very easy to study Hebrew with it. The authors really take you by the hand and lead you slowly into the new language. There are ample but never too long explanations of the grammar. The exercises and dialogs use almost exactly the vocabulary you've just been studying and there are always not only transcriptions but also translations with all the dialogs so you can really study it by yourself.Navigating the eBook is somewhat difficult - it takes a while to get to the solutions and the screen is a little too small. This is because this wasn't conceptualized as an eBook but is just the digital version of a normal book. When I study with this book, I change my display settings to landscape, so I can read the writing more easily and the pictures in the exercises are a little bigger. All in all, I'm happy with this purchase although I would still recommend the real book if you can get your hands on it.MUCH better than Cornelsen's "Selbstlernkurs Hebräisch".
