That was a great read, I couldn’t put it down and read it in a single setting. It’s Shea‘s story, a 25 year old Pathfinder living in the Highlands. In a hostile, even deadly, environment that surrounds every village, everyone is dependent on the members of the Pathfinder’s Guild. They lead people through perilous lands so that they can trade and stuff. So a Pathfinder should be treated with respect, but that is not, what Shea experiences in her backwaters village assignment. On the contrary, the village’s elders are snide towards Shea, dismiss her time and again. She usually keeps her professional cool, even when the elders’ decisions get her whole party captured by warriors from the steppes. The warlord, Fallon, had been once rescued by Shea and made it his mission to find her again. So, if you think now: „Oh no, insta-love, the usual, ...“ then I can tell you that no, this is not the usual. Because Shea disguises as a boy and vanishes right under the warlord’s nose into his army and becomes a scout. Well, not just a scout, but the best scout. And no, she is no super-special-snowflake, she trained hard for years to get the abilities she now has. She makes mistakes and has a flawed character, as does every human being and is therefore extremely relatable. I liked her a lot.So for the most part of this book, Shea is getting into one adventure after another and her wits and her training are what get her and her comrades out unscathed time and again. But yes, there is romance as well, but it’s on the back burner for a long time and if I‘m honest, it wasn’t my favorite part. Shea evading was just so much more fun. Although I have to admit that I loved her holding her own no matter what. She always stayed true to herself. The world building is a bit rough around the edges, because it’s plain that there must have been a time, when people were on a whole different technological level in the broken lands. But that was before the „great cataclysm“, some form of Armageddon that threw the world (Earth?) back into the Bronze Age. It’s cool, but a lot of questions are still unanswered. This is book one in a series, so the end is just one wrapped up issue and the adventure goes on with „Mist’s Edge“.

This is a really good read except for the love story. Featuring the interesting and strong female lead Shea, who works as a Pathfinder and guides vilagers through beast-infested wilderness, this book had me hooked immediately. The mostly male side characters are equally interesting and the wordbuilding is sound so that the first part of Shea establishing herself as a valuable scout while havng run ins with various beasts was a pleasure to read.Unfortunately, the male protagonist Fallon Hawkvale, warlord of the invading Tarteri tribe, exhibits an unoriginal caveman attitude when it comes to Shea. He's immediately possessive, obsessive and for months wants to kidnap her. This unlikely love story and Shea suddenly changing attitude from no-nonsense and fiercely independent to lovesick seemed unbelievable (Stockholm Syndrome?).Altogether, it's nonetheless a thrilling and well imagine tale with a few minor drawbacks. 3/5 stars

I loved almost everything about this book. The only thing I did not like too much was the romantic conclusion. It seemed half baked. "I've been resisting the whole book and risking my life for this resistance, but hey lets just sh*g, I just don't care anymore,..." After all the lovely buildup of tension it seemed a bit anticlimatic. It's funny: I like to re-read parts of this book, but it's rather her first time of disentangling herself from him with him having to let her go or risk that she be harmed than that scene where they finally give in to mutual passion.

So yesterday I was reading midnight emissary and was wooed and today I have read pathfinder's way and am wooed too.Damn.Your writing style is great, I really really freaking loved the story. Both of them.Yeah, what's more to say except- I want more. Hope you keep on writing... Maybe a second book? Or a third one to the other series? Yeah I know there is a first part, but haven't known until I was finished and there was an excerpt on the first one. -.- mhh.. Weeeeell, either way please continue. It had humor, depth, wit and all that stuff where you are not able to put a book down. When she was discovered my heart stopped for a bit and then I couldn't stop grinning.Guys, this one is pretty awesome and I don't say stuff like that lightly- but be prepared.. It ends too soon and will leave you hanging. Kind of like a deal breaker, but a good one.
